Hormonal Imbalance
Reviewed by our qualified colonic hydrotherapists — naturopaths and allied health practitioners, including ATMS, ANTA and MAA members
Last updated

Hormones are regulated by a complex system involving the ovaries, thyroid, adrenal glands and liver, among others — and the liver in particular plays a role in clearing excess hormones from circulation once they’ve done their job. Some clients find that supporting elimination and liver function contributes to a sense of better balance, though we’re careful not to overstate what a colonic can do here.
Where colonic hydrotherapy fits
For clients focused on hormonal balance, a coffee infusion is often chosen to support liver detoxification, or an alkalising greens infusion for general rehydration and mineral support. Some clients also use colonic hydrotherapy as part of preconception preparation — one of the practitioners here, Carmen Farrugia, specialises specifically in fertility-focused naturopathy and can talk through how colonic support fits into a broader plan.
What your therapist checks before your session
Irregular or absent periods, unexplained weight changes, mood changes, or symptoms pointing to a thyroid or adrenal issue need proper investigation — more than a colonic on its own offers. That investigation does not have to start with a GP. Hormonal and thyroid presentations are everyday naturopathic work, and the naturopaths here can arrange the blood pathology that shows what is actually happening, then work on it through diet, stress and sleep rather than straight to a prescription. That pathology goes through a private laboratory and is paid directly to it, without a Medicare rebate.
If the results point to something needing an endocrinologist, we will refer you to your GP with a letter of findings and recommendations, and name a specialist we rate where we have one.
Pregnancy and fertility considerations
Colonic hydrotherapy isn’t recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. If you’re trying to conceive or are further along in pregnancy, talk to your practitioner about timing and suitability before booking.
What to expect
We’ll ask about your health background, any hormonal diagnoses, and pregnancy status during pre-session screening, and tailor recommendations accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
Can colonic hydrotherapy fix a hormonal imbalance?
No — a colonic isn't a treatment for an underlying hormonal condition; it's complementary support around elimination and liver function. Hormonal presentations are everyday naturopathic work though, so the wider picture is something the naturopaths here take on directly, including arranging hormone and thyroid pathology. Where results call for an endocrinologist we refer you to your GP with a letter of findings.
Is colonic hydrotherapy safe if I'm trying to conceive?
Many clients use colonics as part of preconception preparation, and one of the practitioners here, Carmen, specialises specifically in fertility support. It's not recommended once you're in the first trimester of pregnancy — talk to your practitioner about timing if this applies to you.
