Meadowsweet contains methyl salicylate, the natural relative of aspirin — if you are sensitive to salicylates or have been told to avoid aspirin, this is not the one for you. Bitters also work by stimulating stomach acid and bile, so check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you have a stomach ulcer or reflux. Bloating and spasm that persist or change character are worth investigating rather than managing with a supplement.

Digestex is a practitioner-formulated tablet built on bitter herbs: dandelion root, lemon balm, meadowsweet, gentian, cinnamon and ginger. The label indicates it for the relief of digestive discomfort such as bloating, flatulence and intestinal spasms, and for stimulating the digestive secretions that break a meal down.
Bitters are an old idea with a plain mechanism. The taste itself prompts the stomach and gallbladder to get going before the food arrives, which is why the directions say to take it with food rather than after it.
