Bloating
Reviewed by our qualified colonic hydrotherapists — naturopaths and allied health practitioners, including ATMS, ANTA and MAA members

Bloating — a feeling of fullness, tightness or visible distension in the abdomen — is one of the most common concerns we see, and one that responds well to a combined approach of colonic support and looking at what’s actually triggering it.
What tends to cause it
Bloating can come from swallowed air, certain foods (particularly high-FODMAP foods, dairy or artificial sweeteners in sensitive people), an imbalance in gut bacteria, slow transit through the bowel, or as a symptom of an underlying condition like IBS or SIBO. For many clients it’s a mix of several of these rather than one clear cause.
How colonic hydrotherapy may help
A closed-system session can help clear retained waste and gas that’s contributing to that tight, distended feeling, and several of our practitioners incorporate gentle abdominal massage during treatment specifically to help move trapped gas along. A probiotic or turmeric infusion is often paired with a bloating-focused session, aimed at supporting gut flora balance and calming inflammation respectively.
When to see a doctor instead
Bloating that’s new, persistent, or comes with unintentional weight loss, a change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks, blood in the stool, or a family history of bowel or ovarian cancer should be checked by a GP rather than treated as routine bloating. Our pre-session screening asks about these before any treatment begins.
What to expect
Most clients feel noticeably less distended straight after a session. If bloating is a recurring pattern rather than a one-off, it’s worth talking to your practitioner about diet triggers and whether a short course, alongside an infusion, makes sense for you.
Related conditions
Bloating frequently overlaps with constipation, IBS and sluggish digestion — worth a read if any of those also sound familiar.

Frequently asked questions
Why does abdominal massage help with bloating?
Gentle massage during your session can help stimulate movement through the colon and encourage trapped gas and waste to move along, which is why several of our practitioners incorporate it into bloating-focused sessions.
Can bloating come back after a session?
It can, particularly if the underlying trigger — certain foods, stress, or an untreated condition like IBS — is still present. That's why we usually talk through diet and trigger patterns alongside your session rather than treating it as a one-off fix.
Does colonic irrigation help with bloating?
Reduced bloating is the single most commonly reported effect, and often the most immediate — many people notice their stomach feels flatter before they've left the clinic. Clearing trapped gas and waste is the straightforward explanation. Whether it lasts depends entirely on what was causing the bloating in the first place.
How long does the flatter feeling last after a colonic?
Anywhere from a day to a few weeks, depending on the cause. If bloating was mostly a backlog of gas and waste, relief can hold for some time. If it's driven by food intolerance, SIBO, IBS or stress, it will return as those triggers continue — which is the more useful thing to work on.
Why am I still bloated after a colonic?
Occasionally bloating persists or briefly worsens for a few hours as the bowel settles and residual gas moves through — that's normal and short-lived. If bloating is unchanged after a session or two, it's a sign the cause sits outside the colon, and worth investigating properly with your GP rather than booking more sessions.
